How To Help A Background Vocalist Become a Lead Vocalist
it was a great video🙌 I'm not really sure if it is the best time to ask but, I was wondering if I can help you create better distribution through your videos?
I feel like in some bands I’ve played with in the past, the keys player drowns out the bass. Any advice on this?
Definitely something you'd have to have a conversation with your keyboardist about "hey i want to make sure we're on the same page... let's talk about it!"
Why on earth would this be of any consequence
😢😢why?
This is so helpful Thank you!
Thanks Jimmy! You're too kind! Always encouraged by you too!
This. Was. Excellent. You sounded like a real deal minister too. Thank You man.
Thanks Tom! Glad it was helpful!
Should have given us longer of your playing, sounded good, Sir.
Great information! You mentioned several times that this is intended to be used in conjunction with a drum set. However, we don't have a drum set and only use percussion. (Right now, it's just a cajon with a mic inside, but we are considering adding some elements.) Do you have a guide or some tips for folks who don't have drums and are using percussion exclusively?
We do this set up (same one I showed in the vid) for youth band...so yes, you can totally play this without drums. If that's the case, put a couple of good kick and snare samples on it, and play it like a cajon (kick/snare rhythms) with some shaker on the right hand. I often personally play it like this for the youth band. I'd also leave the cajon set up (have them sit on it) and then they can switch between both for different sounds for different songs. Does that make sense?
Awesome set up! Thanks for sharing Alex 👊
Thanks Spencer!
I must admit, I read his post and I’m in that category of vocalists. I’ve always struggled with why I’m not given lead parts while others are. Occasionally some places have let me lead while most of the time I’ve been told “you’re not quite ready to be a lead vocalist” but I have always aspired to be a worship leader. So let me just ask, what defines if one is ready to lead songs and how does one go about getting there? I feel like that’s something that’s never been clearly communicated to me.
Watch the road you moron.
I dislike having to admit that but, yeah, I think so as well. Do you have anything on writing music? What are your thoughts regarding each congregation writting their own music according to what each church is going through?
I have a couple podcast episodes on songwriting for your church. You can use the search function on our podcast page to find them: www.worshipministrytraining.com/podcast
Which songs where you thinking about?
Over last 2 weeks I did Open the Eyes of My Heart, Agnus Dei, Refiners Fire, Worthy of My Praise, You Are My All In All, Lord I Give You My Heart.
I love scripture songs!
Yes!!
Check out the 70's❤
Will do!
Great stuff man!
Hey Alex! What lapel/mic setup do you have? I know there are many options out there, so just asking what you've landed on :)
DJI (it came with the Pocket 3)
Very good 🎉
Love this, Alex! I'm planning to "level up" the referrals / checking with other leaders & senior pastor as to holistic health. Excited to see the percussion setup - I have found that "cajon" is a semi-entry level position, but I'm thinking drum pad should come soon. I've just been as minimally tech savvy to cue that up, but here's to 2025...! Love the interest night & more "non-threatening activities". Does the church have a ministry interest night, or did you set that up solo?
I'll be posting the video about percussion in early June, so keep an eye out! Regarding the church's interest night...no...just the worship department. The church does sometimes have a "serve Sunday" like a ministry fair type thing. But these interest nights are just the worship / tech crews putting them on. I'll likely document the process and post tooo. :)
Perfect ( ͡°❥ ͡°)
I'm in a fairly new church plant. I started helping with leading worship about 3 years ago. I lead about 2 Sunday's per month. It's just me on my guitar. Most times when I lead, no one sings along, claps, or does does anything at all. It really discourages me and makes me wonder if the Lord has really called me to it. I'm open to any advice the Lord would lead you to give me. I appreciate your ministry and miss seeing you at South Bay.
In CCM, as far as bass goes... stay low and in the pocket. Only time you really need to run up the fretboard is if you are doing a fill that you need to cut through the mix. People try to make bass a complicated thing. Lock up with the drummer on 1 and 3... don't over play.
Yes!! Preach!
Support the groove and hold it together 😎!
🙌
After 20 years in the corporate world, and 12 years as a volunteer vocalist, I'm feeling a call to full time worship ministry. What is the basic foundation that needs to be laid to allow me to launch into full time ministry?
Great question. And exciting times! Here's a chapter of a book I never released that covers that: docs.google.com/document/d/1M4QWNF8aS8gGcs6475mo-UQekuavlOlm5N0Jp3Wslys/edit?usp=sharing and this podcast covers a similar topic: www.worshipministrytraining.com/qa-how-do-i-get-hired-as-a-worship-leader/ Hope these help. Let me know what questions they raise for you
What are your thoughts on signaling during the songs? Do you use vocal cues, hand signs, something different?
Thanks. All of the above. Vocal cues for congregation and band... but also handsignals to music director who then communicates to the band in the ears. Mainly just "repeat" or "bring it down". How about you?
@@WorshipMinistryTraining as someone who leads from guitar I generally stick to vocal cues but that can sometimes not work the best. We also have a general understanding that if there is no vocal cue it means we continue with the songs normal structure.
Bro! I had no idea how good your voice was! You are the full package!
ha!!! Just a squawky Armenian!!
E is the root note. Therefore It’s in the key of E. At the end of the day though if everyone is playing the right chords at the right time, does it really matter what key it’s in?
It's in Mixolydian mode! (The same as major key but with a flat 7th.) We play it in D Mixolydian with D as the first chord of the song.
Excellent video! Showing off those pipes 💪🏼
haha. Thanks Casey
It's a post that's part of the latest episode (developing a ministry strategy)
I'm part of your worship school. Can you help me to find this post?
Where can i listen to this podcast?
Great video Alex! Super helpful stuff! Watched this and did the exercise with one of my other worship leaders! Thanks for this idea!
Awesome Dalton! I'd be curious to hear what the biggest problem you identified was?
@@WorshipMinistryTraining for us it is a lack of electric guitar players in our youth and in our college ministry.
@@DaltonShaffer-ov2tw What's going to be your attack plan on that?
Hi, how do I know download chordpro on my windows system?
I'm not sure. I don't have windows, but it should download just the same.
Love your approach to this Alex, especially the discernment to wait it out and not be hasty!
Thanks brother! Grateful for you and your ministry too!
Hi Alex - really appreciate your candid thoughts here - sounds like a long season that needed a lot of patience/discernment and I am not surprised by your comment that the 'transformation' through that was worth it. Could you share more about your fasting process? Help a brother out in similar circumstances!
Thanks brother. I would fast every Wednesday for 24 hours. From dinner the previous day to Wed evening. I would just pray and ask God to guide me every time I felt hungry. Things started happening when I started fasting. Praying God guides you!
Thank you for sharing brother. It’s encouraging to know that quitting isn’t necessarily a negative thing but like your case a God thing.
Amen.
Fantastic, Alex! Praise God for you!
Thanks JC! Praise God for you too!
thank you Alex for your transparency and I see how God has blessed your obedience while patiently waiting on the Lord!
Thanks Arturo! I know God will bless you for your obedience too!
As a long time volunteer on a variety of worship teams, I have found myself being abandoned by my current church’s Worship Team Leadership.. It feels like I have aged out of my usefulness and am not able to keep up. It has made me want to make a change to a place where my modest skills could be useful. The problem is that my wife is a women’s small group leader and heads up the prayer team. She has told me that she has no desire to leave our church. This has really put me in a hard place.
That is tough. My only thought is, see if there are other ways you can serve, and patiently pray and continue to discuss with your wife. You two are one flesh. And as the man, you are called by God to lay down your life for your wife...to love her as Christ loved the church. I have a friend who is in a similar position as you. It's really tough, but I know God will give you strength. 🙏
I like how you said you should be running to your next church and not leaving God. There's been some people where God removes them. His purpose is more important for us than a church. God would not be a fan of institutions. People eventually in the last days inadvertently take on doctrins of devils. Staying for a whole 2 years was well enough time to figure that out. Kuddos to you sir. May God bless you and keep you
Thanks Steven!
Thank you precious bass player brother. I appreciate the tips 🙏
Awesome! God bless you!
Starting with 14 people is not “from scratch” lol
Haha. I guess that's true. But for the amount of services we had to do per week (6 on 3 different days) it was definitely not enough team members to fill all the slots.
Would love to have 14 ppl.
For a church of 10,000, 14 people is a very small team. As mentioned 6 services over 3 different day is a lot of work. As a worship leader it’s important to be mindful not to over use your worship team. It can burn out volunteers. Even with a deep love of the Lord and worship , being on team all the time can stress a person’s personal life as well.
@@jester92345 I'm part of a worship team. It's me and the pastor. Church is about 37
@@steveniedowicz8335 That can be tough to be musically creative with that...but God calls us to do the best we can with what He's entrusted to us. And He knows what our church needs. Keep doing your best!
I so appreciate the thoughtfulness behind your decision! Proud to call you friend, Alex 👊
Thanks Spencer. Appreciate you too brother!
Alex, thanks for sharing all this... super helpful, thoughtful, and applicable. I'm not a full-time worship leader, but have definitely pondered it over the years. Some of what you shared is why I have been hesitant to pursue it, so great to hear your perspective/experience on working through this topic.
Glad it was helpful!
Outstanding video, Alex. I appreciate how you navigate your situation contextually, but help others to see the general application. Thanks for leading the way.
Thanks Seth! Blessings on you brother!
Thanks for sharing your experience Alex, a lot of wisdom in this one.
Thanks Ryland
Really have to listen to the entire video to get over the eyebrow raising points and hear the balance. Finishing with a 9.5/10.
Aww! Thanks Dale! There most not be many thorough worship bass tutorials if youtube keeps recommending mine. I am DEFINITELY not a bassist! haha!
i want you
I am a beginner and I love to play the bass do you have any tips or anything that I can Lori
Hey Leroy. Check out Scotts Bass Lessons channel. He's got a TON of bass specific content.
Thank you sir for this video.

way to much talking and not enough playing
Thanks for the comment Mike! This was actually an audio-podcast initially... which is why I did so much talking / explaining and less showing. Definitely agree with you...for UA-cam it's too much tell and not enough show. Your comment will help me make better videos in the future. Thanks!
